3 Types Of Floor Plans That’ll Make You Want A New Home

Find Your Ideal Floor Plan For Your Next Home In Northern Virginia

Your 3 main types of floor plans include the traditional, contemporary, and custom plans. Traditional floor plans separate each room with walls and a doorway. Contemporary floor plans remove most of these walls to create a more open type of floor plan, such as by having the kitchen and living room in the same space. Then you can design your own with a custom floor plan.

Each one has it’s pros and cons and you can read about them right here.

Design Ideas For Our Next Home

Elizabeth and Will are looking for their next home, but there’s one problem…

They aren’t sure what layout they want to have. There are too many different types of floor plans they can choose from and after looking at them for so long they all seem a little too similar. The couple has seen cross-section, detached, mansion, cabin, cottage, and other types but none have spoken to them yet.

Elizabeth is feeling frustrated and Will’s about ready to give up for the day. At this rate, they might as well stay in their current home or copy the floor plan.

But then Elizabeth clicks on a link that should show them 3 main types of floor plans. It takes them to a home construction contractor’s website. Who knows, if the plans look good enough they might even look at this contractor’s house plans.

Traditional (Or Closed) Types Of Floor Plans

Elizabeth notices that ‘closed’ doesn’t mean ‘cramped’:

This is because traditional style floor plans have the same amount of space, just with more walls. You can walk into almost any home built 10 years or more ago and see this type of floor plan.

The couple likes it so far because of its benefits:

  1. More design options
    • Add your own flair to each room using different materials, color, etc
  2. Providing a cozier feel
    • Larger rooms can feel too spacious when you are the only one in them
  3. More privacy
    • You can have more areas to find your quiet time
  4. Better sound control
    • More walls mean more objects sound has to pass through to reach other areas, thus muting it more
  5. Possibly lowering energy bills
    • It is usually easier to heat or cool areas with more walls as they provide insulation

But don’t settle on the traditional floor plans just yet! Elizabeth and Will are still going to look at 2 more types of floor plans before they decide.

The Contemporary Open-Concept Home Design

The couple turns to each other in excitement as they instantly agree on liking this modern design better:

The open feel it provides is great for allowing people to feel together even when they aren’t in the same room. For example, the chef won’t have to feel isolated from everyone in the living room because there’s a large opening connecting the rooms.

These types of floor plans have many benefits:

  1. Accessibility
    • It’s much easier to move around with more space
  2. A more open line of sight
    • This is great for families as it is easier to keep an eye on your kids
  3. Better natural light
    • Light from your windows has fewer walls blocking it, thus lighting your space with natural, non-costly light
  4. More contemporary aesthetic
    • Newer homes are trending towards the open-concept floor plan
  5. Possible better resale value
    • As the open-concept style is growing in popularity it should be easier to sell

While this is certainly appealing to the couple, it’s the last of these types of floor plans that has Will and Elizabeth the most excited.

Your Custom Types Of Floor Plans

They can create their ideal home basically from scratch.

They can choose materials, colors, rooms, fixtures, styles, and anything they want with custom types of floor plans. They can also make it custom without going into that much detail, such as by choosing a layout and letting the builder handle the rest.

One custom idea that’s gaining popularity is having a larger shower without a door. It can take a little getting used to, especially if you’re used to smaller showers, but it’s fun once you do!

There are just so many ways to customize a home that Elizabeth and Will will need to look at some house designs for ideas.

Which Would You Choose?

Elizabeth and Will decide to build a custom home. They like having the almost endless possibilities and combinations that come with it. All they need to do now is find out a little more about custom home building
